AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUSTAINABILITY IMPACT ASSESSMENT (SIA) OF WTO TRADE NEGOTIATIONS

IARC (University of Manchester) invites all interested parties to participate in the consultation process.

The SIA methodology is intended to assist negotiators and other interested stakeholders in the post-Doha WTO trade negotiations. It has been designed to help in identifying the likely economic, social and environmental consequences for their region or country, of one negotiated set of outcomes compared to another.

The practical application of the SIA methodology began in April 2002, and is scheduled to continue throughout the post-Doha negotiations period. The first part of this work programme provided for three detailed sector SIA studies (covering market access, environmental services and competition), and a preliminary overview study for the Doha Agenda as a whole.

In 2004/05, three further sector studies were undertaken, covering agriculture, forest and distribution services.

In 2006 two further studies will be completed: a global Overview SIA of the DDA as a single undertaking and a SIA of Fisheries.

Consultation with stakeholders is an integral part of the SIA process, and mechanisms have been established to ensure that stakeholders can contribute fully to the SIA study both as experts, and as part of the consultative process. The contractor and the Commission are committed to actively seeking the expert views of stakeholders, and to ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive process of consultation with civil society. The contractor will place all Reports on this website and comments will be invited. The Commission will organise public meetings for each Report. The contractor will maintain an open dialogue throughout the process, using a dedicated email address (sia-trade@man.ac.uk).

The consultants invite interested parties to contact them with any comments or questions on the scope and coverage of the sector studies that will be undertaken during 2006.

If you would like to contribute to the SIA of Proposed WTO Trade Negotiations consultative process or comment on any of the reports, please contact:
