Phase One (mid July - mid September 1999)

The main objectives of the first two phases of the study were:

  • To develop a methodology for carrying out a sustainability impact assessment;
  • To use the methodology to make a broad qualitative assessment of the impact upon sustainability of the New Round.

A focused literature review on sustainability impact assessment (SIA) methodologies was undertaken. SIA methodologies used in previous/ongoing appraisals and evaluation of specific trade policies and agreements were examined. A sustainable impact assessment methodology for subsequent use in Phase Two was developed.
